Country Star Tim McGraw Shares His Battle With Alcohol
Alcoholism is one of the most rampant diseases in America today. While so many assume that those who struggle with it are poor, irresponsible, or just plain reckless, nothing could be further from the truth. Anyone could find themselves affected—even country singing superstars like Tim McGraw.
To him, at first, it wasn’t that big of a deal. As he told he told "Oprah's Master Class" last summer, “I used to have to have a few drinks to get on stage, because I'm sort of an innately shy person.” He adds that to go out on stage and sing in front of so many people, “was nerve-wracking for me in a lot of ways. That was the way I got my courage—some liquid courage, with a little Jack Daniels.”
Fighting the Alcohol
It took some time to realize just what was going on: Tim was addicted to the alcohol. With some help from family and friends, he recognized what he had to do:
“It got to the point where I knew that I drank too much,” he recalls. “I knew that it was affecting my personal relationships . . . it was affecting my family. It was turning me into a person that I didn't want to be . . . I was at a point where I could lose everything that I had in my life—first and foremost, my family. It [was] time to stop. And I stopped.”
